The second-ranked Zverev recovered from a bad start to beat Zhang Zhizhen 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 but unfancied Gao Xinyu stunned German Laura Siegemund 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 to even the tie. The German pair combined in mixed doubles to defeat Zhang Shuai and Zhang Zhizhen 6-2, 7-6 (7/3).

As for Kazakhstan, they notched up a comfortable win over Greece to progress. Rybakina defeated Maria Sakkari 6-4, 6-3 after Alexander Shevchenko stunned Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Former Wimbledon champion Rybakina, who is using the 18-nation tournament to prepare for January 2025’s Australian Open, edged a tight opening set against Sakkari before powering ahead 5-0 in the next. Shevchenko pulled off a major upset when he downed an ill and error-prone world number 11 Tsitsipas 6-4, 7-6(0).

In the quarter-final, Rybakina will meet Siegemund first, followed by another intense match between Zverev and Shevchenko. The two sets of players will then combine for the doubles rubber.
